Petroglyphs photographed at rock art sites and carved in stone make great southwest art wall hangings for your home or office!  why buy petroglyph replicas?   I use real stone (not molded plaster or cement) and frame them in oak. The width and height of each piece is given along with some information about the image. Frame color and background are selected to accentuate the carved stone. Stone vary in color and texture making each a truly unique piece of southwestern art.

Five costumed figures.
These five costumed figures are carved into the Wall along Chevelon Creek, a few miles southeast of Winslow, AZ. The figures may represent spiritual beings, shaman, or ceremonial participants. Early, or pre, Hopi people occupied this area and the petroglyphs were likely to have been made by them.

This realistic owl is part of a densely populated rock art panel and is surrounded by impossible mythical creatures (note the two heades creature to the right of the owl). Located in the Dead Mountains of eastern California is a corridor once used by the prehistoric Mohave people as a trade route that extended across the Mojave desert to the Pacific coastal tribes. Double outlined symmetrical figures, and nonrepresentational geometric motifs are typical of Mohave Culture petroglyphs. $279 plus $25 shipping

Coso sheep shrine
This petroglyph from a broken panel in the Coso Range of Eastern California depicts a bighorn sheep who has been killed by an atlatl bearing hunter. The sheep's head has been removed and placed on a pole to show respect and to honor the sheep. A dotted line forming a bidirectional spiral indicates the sheep's journey into, and back from, the spirit world where the sheep will be reborn and thus replenish the herd. Ca. pre AD 500.

This petroglyph panel is carved into a rock cliff along Chevelon Creek near Winslow, AZ. The difference in the color (due to repatinization) and style (due to cultural affiliation) of the petroglyphs indicates the petroglyphs were made at different times at least many hundred years apart.

This complex and well made panel is located high on a cliff face at the Kohta Circus rock art site a few miles east of Mesquite, Nevada. The panel is attributed to the Virgin branch (Virgin River) of the Anasazi Culture who abandoned the area around 1100 AD.

This interesting and well made panel is located at Sears Point, Arizona, overlooking the Gila River . Although Hohokam and Patayan people alternately lived in this area, the imagery and workmanship more closely resembles that of the Hohokam Culture. Circa AD1200.

Group of bighorn sheep.
Rock art panels containing large numbers of  bighorn sheep, often depicted in migratory lines, are common in the Coso Mountain Range. Such petroglyphs may be a spiritual appeal for replenishment of the bighorn herds in order to secure successful hunting in the future. This petroglyph is found in Petroglyph Canyon, near Ridgecrest, CA.  Circa prior to AD 600.  $195 plus $30 shipping.

Rattlesnake.
This rattlesnake may represent the great medicine man Humasereha who took the form of a great snake "whose head was wider than the door of a house". He could make it rain and thunder by rattling his tail. Humasereha lived in a house made of hair in the Gulf of California and was the source of dark power. The petroglyph is found in Picture Canyon, California.

Yahwera with Chuckwallas.
This patterned body anthropomorph may represent Yahwera, the Master of Animals, who may or may not allow hunters to be successful in their hunt. Chuckwallas could carry messages to and from the spirit world. This petroglyph is found in Big Petroglyph Canyon, Coso Range, California. Circa AD 900-AD 1300.

Eight sheep in a line.
These eight sheep are carved into the wall of a remote canyon in the Coso Range near Ridgecrest, CA. When traveling to and from feeding grounds and watering holes it is common for bighorn sheep sheep to walk in single file. This petroglyph appears to be a prehistoric depiction of that activity. The style used to portray these sheep; thick legs, round body shape, and parallel horns curving back indicate it was made at least 2000 years ago, and possibly much earlier.  sold

Sundagger.
Located on fajada butte, NM, sandstone slabs positioned above theis petroglyph cast shadows which mark tohe cycles of both the sun and moon. A vertical shaft of light passes through the spiral at summer solstice. At winter solstice, two sun daggers frame the large spiral.

Anasazi   a pueblo people centered in the four corners area developing from the Basketmaker Culture and represented by modern groups such as the Hopi and Zuni.   more Anasazi information
